Shayla’s Journey!

September 29, 2006 – I find out we are expecting a baby! Yay! After trying to get pregnant for about 10 months, it was a great thing to discover!

October 26, 2006 – First ultrasound and first time I hear Shayla’s heartbeat! Wow! I didn’t realize you could hear it this early!

December 18, 2006 - IT’S A…GIRL!!! Yay! Yesterday at 16 weeks I went to see my best friend Heather who is an ultrasound technician! Ever since she became an ultrasound technician I have been telling her when I get pregnant I want you to do my ultrasound to determine the gender of my first child. So, last night Jon and I drove down to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange where she works to find out. She was being very modest and was sitting with her legs crossed Indian style covering herself so we could not see what gender she was. She was VERY active. Heather said she was more active than almost any baby she has seen in the womb at 16 weeks. Every time I would laugh or move she would start moving like crazy – it looked like she was doing the hokey pokey or kickboxing. So cute to see her arms and legs moving all around. IT was crazy to see how much movement was going on but not feel anything. But she was still being modest. After about 45 minutes she finally stretched her legs out but then placed her hands between her legs once again covering herself up! Finally, Heather spotted the tell tale three lines that show a girl and got a few pictures of that so we are pretty sure it is a girl!

February 12, 2007 - Here I am 5 months pregnant!

April 21, 2007 - I had fun going through Jon's baby book and pictures to find a photo to put on the well of each of us as babies. I hadn't seen most of his baby pictures and made me more curious to think what our baby will look like (hopefully more like me - at least for the girl!) It was also neat to read how similar our births were - I was born at 5:21 pm and weighed 8 lbs 1 oz and was 20 inches long. Jon was born at 5:22 pm and weighed 8 lbs 3 oz and was 20 inches long. Close huh?

May 4, 2007 - Here I am 8 months pregnant!

May 5, 2007 - This week my doctor told me that Shayla is lying sideways in the transverse position - which she should not be doing this close to my due date!. I will be having an ultrasound this Monday which will be the start of my 37th week, to determine exactly what position she is then. If she has not turned I will have the option of having the dr. try to turn her manually or a c-section. If she does a manual turn - called an external cephalic version - it may or may not work and it may or may not put me into early labor (I would have that the week of May 14th)... and if it doesn't work I will have to have a c-section (unless she turns on her own which has a smaller likelihood this far along!)

May 7, 2007 - I saw the specialist today and had my ultrasound. Shayla turned, but in the wrong direction! So now she is breech instead of transverse. The same options apply - have the doctor try to turn her and see if that works, or schedule a C-section.

May 10, 2007 – In the hospital all day for the attempted external version where the doctor tries to move the baby's head down as as last ditch effort to avoid c-section with a breech baby. She would not budge at all - not even an inch! The doctor said it may be a good sign for me later that she has an easy temperament and is not easily bothered, but I think she is just stubborn like her momma! Who knows!

Here I am 9 months pregnant!

Here I am going to the hospital in the morning of my c-section!

May 23, 2007– Shayla Marie Nelson arrives via c-section at 8:19 on weighing 7 pounds exactly and 18 inches long.
